I had the privilege of photographing Tammy and Caleb recently for their beautiful Carlsbad maternity photos. I love this beautiful view of the California coastline and view of the ocean so much – it truly never gets old!

I’m obsessed with the entire family’s outfits. They knew exactly what to wear to really “pop” against the gorgeous landscape and really showed off!! Wearing white for maternity or pregnancy announcement photos is a perfect choice as a neutral outfit, especially if you don’t know baby’s gender yet. White also really shows up well against the blue, green, and brown background colors of the cliff coastline and ocean.
You certainly do not have to base your outfit based on baby’s gender (seriously, you can wear whatever you want no matter if you’re having a boy or a girl!!). You truly cannot go wrong with wearing any colors for your maternity shoot. But if that’s something you do want to do…If you’re wanting to stay neutral based on baby’s gender (or you don’t know the baby’s gender yet), wearing white, green, or yellow is a great choice. If you’re having a girl, wearing shades of pinks or purples could be a good indication. If you’re having a boy, consider wearing blues, reds, or browns.
Another option is to wear neutral colored clothes while wearing more colorful accessories or including colorful props. Wear pink or blue jewelry, bring a bouquet of flowers, wear colorful shoes, etc. These are more subtle ways to include the baby’s gender without making it the entire outfit.
For your partner, choose an outfit that compliments your outfit. Wear all white or cream, khaki pants and a blue or pink button-down shirt, brown corduroy pants with a light green or yellow polo shirt — are just a few suggestions.

This beach in Carlsbad has plenty of free street parking. This view of the cliff is off on one side of the location. On the opposite side, there is a staircase to get down to the beach. If you wanted to go to both spots at this location, just be prepared for some walking especially for the pregnant mama’s.
The best lighting at Carlsbad is either sunrise in the morning or at sunset in the evening. You truly cannot go wrong with either time of day! Make sure to check the tide levels before your photoshoot if you’re wanting to go on the beach.
