I had the privilege of photographing Kate and Stephen recently for their beautiful Laguna Beach engagement photos. From the golden glow of the sunset to their adorable new puppy, this engagement shoot was one for the books!

Kate and Stephen are no longer doing long distance between him playing for the MLB and her going to med school (can we talk about a power couple!?) and celebrated by immediately getting a puppy (my kinda people…I also spontaneously got a puppy a few years ago). They’re are now planning their wedding after 5 years together!!

The Engagement Location: Laguna Beach

Kate and Stephen are planning to get married in Hawaii, so getting their photos taken on the beach was a must. They were wanting “SoCal meets Hawaii” kinda vibes for their photos to use for their wedding save the dates invitations. We decided to meet in the middle – since I’m in North County San Diego and they’re in Los Angeles – and go to Orange County for their engagement photos.

This particular location in Laguna Beach has a parking garage available and plenty of street parking nearby. Both the parking garage and street parking have hourly rates to pay.

The best lighting at Laguna Beach is either sunrise in the morning or at sunset in the evening. You truly cannot go wrong with either time of day! We took these pictures at sunset, which was around 8pm in the middle of July, to get the most vibrant colors of the sky over the ocean for their photos. We seriously lucked out with the prettiest sunset this evening!!!

“Emily was truly a dream to work with during our engagement session. From brainstorming photo locations to fit with the theme of our wedding, to outfit inspiration, to timing to utilize the best lighting… she was on top of it all. We were blown away by the quality of our photos, both on film and digital. We had such variety of photos to choose from (settings, poses, lighting, angles) etc. One of our biggest insecurities was looking comfortable in front of the camera and not too “posed”. Emily was wonderful a guiding us behind the camera and giving us prompts to make the photos feel natural and genuine. I cannot recommend her enough! Plus, we wanted to incorporate our new puppy into the photoshoot and Emily gave us all the tips and guidance to make sure that went smoothly! The extra photos with the pup are just perfect!”
