If you’re considering having a photoshoot and including your dog, here’s a few tips to make sure it goes smoothly so you get the best photos with your fur-family member!
First and foremost, you know your dog(s) better than I do. They may not always listen, they may be extra playful, they may run around everywhere, etc. during photos. Don’t stress if they’re being playful, if they’re not looking at the camera, etc. — My style is candid and laidback. I like to give you prompts to capture true emotions/smiles – and that includes you interacting with your doggo! The more stressed you are, the more it will show in your photos. So just take a step back, accept everything happening, and just roll with it!
Who said bribery is bad!? Whether you want to bribe the dog with some treats to look at the camera or if they run off and you need some bribery to have them come back… I’m not here to judge.
This tip is also dependent on the location, but most places require dogs to be on a leash at all times so having a friend come with you to watch the dog or bringing a 10lb weight to tie the leash to is super helpful! This way, you’ll also able to get a few photos of just you and your partner too.
First tip for the leash: I recommend bringing a solid colored and/or neutral leash if your dog is not able to be off leash. If you want to go the extra mile, have the leash match your outfits!
Second tip with the leash: Take off the poop bags attached to the leash and put them in a bag with your phone/wallet/keys. No one wants or needs to remember the poop bags.
Even if it is not blazing hot outside, your dog will likely be thirsty during or after your pictures. Bring some water and a bowl for them. Bringing water is also important if the drive to the location was a bit longer too!
This is not required, but feel free to bring a bandana, a fancy collar, etc. to make your dogs more festive! There’s tons of cool accessories for your dog that can go along with your engagement photos/wedding photos/baby announcement photos/etc.
If you’re going to be near water or the location might be muddy, I highly encourage you to bring a towel with you and leave it in the car. It’ll be helpful in case your dog gets wet or muddy!
